Pregnancy, although not always easy, is a beautiful time. Among other things, it allows women the opportunity to connect deeper with their body, exploring and experiencing something which is truly magical, amazing, timeless – yet often quite difficult.
Below is a quick overview of my experience and what I took from a nutritional supplement standpoint throughout my pregnancy and beyond. I hope you find it useful. Feel free to drop me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) should you have any questions.
First off, I recommend all women take nutritional supplements throughout pregnancy. Healthy diet and lifestyle alone does not ensure we meet our needs – particularly when pregnant. One of the first things I did when I found out I was pregnant was buy a good quality prenatal multivitamin and multi-mineral. I also bought an iron supplement, as tests before and during pregnancy revealed I was low in iron. I took both the prenatal multi and the iron supplement throughout my pregnancy. I also took the recommended amount of folate during my first trimester and some extra Vitamin D during my third. In addition, I used many of my own Body Awakening supplements to help steer clear of common pregnancy symptoms and further boost my nutrition. Here is what else I took and why:
Good quality sleep, particularly when pregnant, is essential. I can’t remember exactly when but at some point during pregnancy I started waking up with the most excruciating leg cramps I had ever experienced. I immediately started using MagC before bed. Within two days my cramps subsided but If I forgot to take it, the cramping would immediately start again. MagC spared me a great deal of pain and a lot of unnecessary night time wake ups.
I took both Probiotic+ and TrueGreens together daily in the mornings, mixing them into a glass of water. I did this for a few reasons. Firstly I wanted to be sure I had a good balance of healthy bacteria to share with my little one when he arrived. As mothers, we pass along our own micro-biome (healthy bacteria living in the GI tract) to our baby during the birthing process and through breastfeeding. This is how our babies establish their own gut flora and immune system. Secondly, I wanted to stay clear of constipation, a common and uncomfortable symptom experienced during pregnancy. TrueGreens in particular helped keep my digestive system working while also providing me with extra vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The Superfood greens in TrueGreens are also wonderful detoxifiers and helped support the liver as it did it’s usual detoxifying duties and processing the excess hormones created during pregnancy.
I took two tablets of VC (2000mg of VC) daily as well. Vitamin C is needed for the production of collagen in the developing baby. It also provided me with additional antioxidant support and helped keep my immune system strong. Also, and extra bonus with vitamin C is it helps protect against stretch marks. Stretch marks were the least of my worries but it was a bonus when I didn’t have any post baby.
I also took OmegaMe (Krill oil) daily. I took a fairly high dose throughout my pregnancy as omega fatty acids are absolutely essential for pregnancy and breastfeeding. The mother supplies the baby with DHA (from fish and fish oil) to her foetus. DHA is required for the development of the baby’s nervous system, brain, and the retina of the eyes. It is very easy for the pregnant mum to become deficient in DHA herself as her body will provide her baby with its DHA requirements often leaving her deficient. As I noticed my skin and hair becoming more dry I knew I needed more of this essential nutrient. I wrote an article on this topic for a months magazine called SassyMama.
So along with a healthy diet and gentle exercise this is what helped me through pregnancy and helped me grow a super healthy, strong, happy and incredible baby.
